Oppex vs. Rootly: A Rootly Alternative with On-Call and AI SRE

Oppex AI is a Rootly alternative that puts incident response, on-call and an AI SRE in one plan. Rootly sells Incident Response and On-Call as separate products at $20 per user each, with its AI SRE priced on request. Oppex Business is $20 per user per month for all three — alert grouping, on-call with phone and SMS escalation, and Oppex Nova, the AI SRE agent that investigates the cause — and Oppex Starter is free for up to 3 users.

INC-0214 — checkout incident timeline
$ 02:14 38 alerts grouped into one incident · 1 engineer paged
02:16 Nova: bad deploy v4.12 · high confidence · evidence attached
02:17 Rollback approved with one click in Slack
✓ 02:23 Resolved · root-cause report drafted, owner assigned

Rootly earned its reputation for well-designed incident workflows in chat: declare, assign, update and write the retrospective without leaving chat. It sells that as Incident Response, with On-Call and an AI SRE as separate products. Oppex starts from the other end — the page and the investigation — and sells it as one plan.

How is Oppex different from Rootly?

  • One product instead of three. With Rootly, paging needs the On-Call product and automatic investigation needs the AI SRE product, each bought on top of Incident Response. Oppex Business includes incident response, on-call and AI investigation for $20 per user.
  • Fewer pages before the workflow starts. A workflow tool is at its best once an incident is declared. Oppex works before that: it groups and correlates alerts from New Relic, Datadog, CloudWatch, Grafana and your other monitoring tools into one incident, and filters false alarms before anyone is paged.
  • Investigation by default. Oppex Nova checks deploys, metrics, logs, traces, past incidents and runbooks on every incident, and returns the likely cause, a confidence level and a recommended fix in about two minutes, with the evidence linked.
  • The fix runs on one approval. Approve the fix in Slack and Oppex runs it, or let automated runbooks act where your policy allows.

What changes for your team

5×faster MTTR
70%less noise
50%less on-call effort
2×fewer late-night calls
3×faster onboarding

Results reported by Oppex customers. Your own numbers are measured in a free one-week noise audit before you commit.

In a typical 2 a.m. incident — a bad deploy to checkout that fires 38 alerts in four minutes — a paging-first tool takes about 2 hours 10 minutes, six people and seven manual steps to resolve it. With Oppex it takes about 9 minutes 20 seconds, one engineer and one approval. See the minute-by-minute timeline.

You stay in control. Oppex proposes; your engineers decide. Every finding links to the signal behind it, low-confidence findings are labelled as such, and nothing runs automatically on a guess. If a finding is wrong, mark it, and Oppex learns from the correction.

Is Oppex cheaper than Rootly?

For incident response and on-call together, Rootly lists $40 per user per month (Incident Response $20 plus On-Call $20), before its AI SRE. Oppex Business is $20 with AI investigation included — half the price, with the AI SRE agent in it.

Rootly prices from its public pricing page, which lists per-user monthly prices without a billing period, publishes no AI SRE price, and offers bundle discounts and up to 50% off for eligible startups. When is Rootly the better choice?

  • You already have paging you are happy with and want workflow automation and retrospectives in chat on top of it.
  • You qualify for Rootly’s startup discount and only need incident response, not on-call or AI investigation.

If you want fewer pages and the cause found for you, without buying three products, Oppex is the closer fit. Comparing incident.io too? See Oppex vs. incident.io.

How do we move from Rootly to Oppex?

The Oppex team imports your users, teams, services, on-call schedules and escalation policies, and connects your monitoring, chat and ticketing tools. Oppex then runs in shadow mode — it groups and investigates a copy of every alert and pages nobody — so you compare results on your own alerts before switching paging over. The full four-week plan.
